PROFESSOR M. V. SHYMANOVSKY (1845– ?) – ONE OF THE INITIATORS OF THE CREATION OF THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY IN UKRAINE (ODESA) AND AN ACTIVE PROPAGANDIST OF THE USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CRIME

Abstract

Scientific activity of the jurist, real state councilor, professor of Novorossiysk (Odessa) University
M. V. Shymanovsky is highlighted – one of the initiators ofthe creation of the first Photographic Society in Ukraine
(1891) and the first chairman of this institution. In addition, he was one of the pioneers-propagandists of the use
of photography in the fight against crime. He is the author of the book “Photography in Law and Justice” (1894).
Unfortunately, the year of the scientist’s death remains unknown. There is reason to believe that after 1917 he
emigrated to one of the European countries, where he died. During the study, historical-legal, historical-comparative,
biographical and formal-legal methods were used, in particular.
