Abstract

The purpose of the article is a scientific comprehension of certain aspects of the fingerprinting history on the
example of the creative activity of the Argentine criminalist Khuan (Ivan) Vuchetych. Methodology. To achieve this
goal the author used, in particular, historico-legal, historical-comparative, and biographical methods. Scientific
novelty. On the example of the creative activity of the famous Argentine criminalist Khuan (Ivan) Vuchetych, some
historical aspects of the fingerprinting formation at the beginning of the 20th century are highlighted. Conclusions.
It is stated that the famous Argentine criminalist Khuan (Ivan) Vuchetych (July 20, 1858 – January 25, 1925) is one of
the founders of fingerprinting registration, the author of the ten-finger system of classification of papillary patterns,
the founder of the world's first fingerprint card index, the initiator of the adoption by the Argentine Parliament of the
law of 1916 on universal fingerprinting of all Argentine citizens and foreigners permanently residing in Argentina.
It is testified that the practical significance of the ideas initiated by Vuchetych is being developed in the works of his
contemporaries.
