Based on previously unknown archival materials, as well as published works on the history of forensic science, the life path and creative activity of Major General of the Engineering Troops Nikolai Kozlov (1851 – after 1906), one of the founders of anthropometry in the Russian Empire, the first the head of the first in Russia St. Petersburg anthropometric station (bureau), the author of the first «Brief Guide for Anthropometric Measurements in order to determine recidivists, compiled according to the Bertillon system» (1891), the author of inventions in the field of aeronautics and aerial photography. In the context of N. Kozlov's activities, the significance of the contribution of Ukrainian forensic doctors N. Obolonsky and E. Bellin to the formation of the anthropometric identification system, as well as the head of the Kiev detective unit G. Rudy in the creation of the first police anthropometric office in Ukraine, is shown.
