The purpose of the article is to analyze the ways of using special knowledge during the investigation of illegal
possession of a vehicle in order to increase the effectiveness of combating such criminal offenses. Methodology. The
methodological basis of the work was the use of both general scientific and special methods of scientific knowledge,
in particular: generalization, analysis and synthesis – to produce reliable conclusions as a result of processing a set of
scientific and empirical sources on the chosen topic; systemic-structural – to develop a system of special knowledge
used during the investigation of illegal possession of a vehicle, and to ensure the comprehensive nature of the
investigation. Scientific novelty. An attempt was made to determine the forms and conditions of the effectiveness
of using of special knowledge during the investigation of illegal possession of a vehicle, the types and possibilities
of certain types of forensic expertise in such proceedings were outlined, taking into account the requirements of
today; certain recommendations were formed based on the identified shortcomings. Conclusions. The use of special
knowledge in proceedings related to the illegal possession of a vehicle is an important tool for increasing the efficiency
and effectiveness of such investigations in the conditions of a permanent increase in the level of "professionalism" of
representatives of the criminal world and the rapid development and modernization of the automobile industry. A
condition for increasing the level of effectiveness of using of special knowledge to solve pre-trial investigation tasks
is a complex approach, which is manifested both in the combination of different forms of using special knowledge
at different stages of the proceedings, and in the appointment of complex forensic expertise to solve important
investigative tasks. Forms of using special knowledge during the investigation of investigated crimes are most often:
carrying out expertise; obtaining expert advice on issues that require special knowledge; the participation of specialists
in conducting investigative (search) actions; interrogations of an expert. What is required during the investigation
is the conduct of transport-commodity, traceological, and technical expertise of documents, as well as, taking into
account the latest methods of committing the investigated crimes, telecommunications and expertise of computer
equipment and software products. A negative impact on results of expertise in investigated proceedings can be caused
by an ignorance of customers regarding the availability and possibilities of certain types of expertise, incorrect wording
of questions to the expert, incorrect determination of the order of forensic expertise, which is often caused by a low
level of interaction between representatives of expert institutions and pre-trial investigation bodies
